What are money market funds?

Money market funds attempt to provide steady income with very low risk. They invest in short-term, low-risk securities (like certificates of deposit or commercial paper) that pay interest at the current market rate (thus, the term money market).

Offering income, stability, liquidity & flexibility

Money market funds are generally considered to be the least volatile type of mutual fund with the goal of maintaining a stable share price of $1.00 - regardless of market conditions. Due to their high degree of safety and liquidity (you can typically access your money any time); money market funds pay relatively low rates of interest. They usually offer lower long-term return potential than other types of funds.

The role of money market funds in your portfolio

Money market funds can be an excellent portfolio diversification tool to balance out higher risk investments. Unlike the invest for the long run approach you should take to most mutual funds, money market funds can also be an ideal "parking spot" for cash you need to keep safe and liquid - whether for the short- or long-term. Some examples include a reserve for emergency situations or a place to hold assets while considering longer-term investment decisions (e.g. equity or fixed income funds). Many investors also exchange money from a money market fund into other mutual funds as part of an automatic investment program.

On the other hand, due to their low returns, money market funds are not usually considered appropriate if you have a longer time frame and are looking for capital appreciation (e.g., saving for retirement).

What Janus money market funds invest in

Our primary objective is the preservation of your capital. What we invest in varies depending on the fund you select:

  • Commercial paper, repurchase agreements and several other types for our regular money market fund
  • Government and government agency securities for our government fund

Please see the funds' prospectuses for more details.

What makes us different

Janus money market funds are managed by seasoned portfolio managers who place a priority on capital preservation. By investing conservatively in highly liquid securities, managers aim to provide competitive yields (interest) without taking any unnecessary risk.
